If it's cold, then I will tune the band to 438Hz so by the time we're all warmed up after playing for a few tunes we're up to pitch (440Hz) uniformally so it means tuning slides and joints don't have to be adjusted too much.
Especially the clarinets who suffer most with cold conditions, if they can't get up to pitch then there's no point in trying to play if they're flat.
Problems only arise when a piano or keyboard are involved as they obviously won't tune down to us when we're cold.
