Well, some DO play English Horn Exclusively (in the big orchestras. I know Tom Stacey rarely places his oboe. But of course, that's the New York Phil for you.) It's just it takes a long long long long time to get that far in your career.
The good news though is there are always more jobs if you do own an English Horn and an oboe. More people like me would much prefer to stick with one instrument than hasle with both.
