Hello,
Sorry I am a little late responding...however I think that the Barret book is your best way to go with the oboe. There is a lot of things in the beginning that explain about the oboe - quite a bit of reading, but possibly will pay off - and the beginning of you playing is very good. Even if you just get the fingering down and can play some things out of the Barret and your embouchure isn't what it really should be, that could be easily changed with a teacher. If you are going to buy reeds, I would suggest buying them from an actual double reed store, for example Midwest Musical Imports. They have a pretty good selection - even in medium. They are probably around $15, but are worth the extra few $$, especially to have something that sounds half-decent.
I hope that this helps...
Take care for now.
