Re: Isolated Beginner now has an oboe

Well... I have rented an oboe. I spent the weekend with it and I have managed to get sound out of it and play a rudimentary C-maj scale in the first octave. My playing sounds more like a saxophone than an oboe, though. I am currently using a Jones "soft" reed, as that's all my local shoppe carried. (This is obviously not a good town for oboes.) The oboe itself is a Selmer 1492 resonite/plastic/student oboe.

My goal in renting the oboe is to determine if the oboe is for me. If it is, then I'll buy a good one and continue. If not, I'll return the instrument and stick with the flute or maybe try clarinet.

I have read comments about both plastic oboes and Jones reeds, and I want to ask everyone what my best path is to getting as "close" to a decent oboe sound as possible, given that I can't really change the fact that the oboe is a plastic Selmer 1492. Should I order a couple La Voz medium reeds? Or should I be able to come as close as possible using the Jones Soft reeds -- provided I practice sufficiently?

Also -- Should I be able to use Jones reeds right out of the box? (After soaking for 20 minutes.) Or do I need to do anything to them? (Such as trim or what not.) Some of them don't "crow" exactly as I have read about. (One did, so I'm convinced I know how to do it.) I'm not hung up on being in tune right now, just in being able to produce the sound an oboe is supposed to make.

Many Thanks to all who have helped me get this far!
