I just found this list after searching for awhile.

I am an adult (mech. engineer by trade) who wants to try the oboe. The problem is that I am not in a location where a teacher is not easy to come by, so I am looking for a little advice about how to proceed by myself -- just initially.

About me: I can site read & play flute music reasonably well, and I also have a few years of experience playing classical guitar. I do well at musical self-instruction, and I simply want to try the oboe because it sounds wonderfully like what I want to play. (Yes, I know I won't sound like recordings anytime soon.) I have read this list a bit and I have seen that at least one other subscriber is self-taught on the oboe, and the rest of ya'll are wonderfully helpful!

I plan to rent an oboe for 2-3 months and see how it goes. A local music shop can obtain a rental oboe for me. After a couple months, I would certainly seek out professional instruction if I find the oboe is for me.

My questions are simple:
1) My hunch is I need to buy some oboe reeds when I rent the oboe. Does anyone have a brand that is not too bad. I know handmade is best , but I just want a brand, probably in a medium. I saw Gowar (sp?) mentioned somewhere, VanDoren, etc. Any favorites that play acceptably right out of the box?
2) Is there a good book on making "first-notes", etc. I have read about how to 'crow' the reed, etc., and a little on how to pad my teeth with my lips and to hold gently, etc. Does anyone have a method book that would be good for self-study?

Thanx in advance to everyone. Please post responses.
I appreciate your help!
