Another thing that helps is when moving from 4th-line D to low D is instead of rolling or sliding to cover the half-hole, quickly lift the first finger off of the key and put it down again, covering the half hole. The disturbance in the air column caused by the momentary opening of the first finger hole can make the low D speak more easily.
And of course prepare the wind for the low D in advance of the switch.
