Re: what is so great about royale loree oboes

The really interesting thing is what many of us witnessed this past summer at the Muncie conference.

Let me preface by saying that I play a Loree AK oboe and a Loree EH. This does not mean, however that I am loyal to Loree's nor does it mean I swear by t hem. I just happened to find two great instruments.

This past summer we were all witness to a very refreshing shift in thought --The performances this summer were so refreshing because they DIDN'T adhere to common practices. A prime example was Francois Leleux's marvelous and refreshing performance of the Strauss Concerto. It was quite a bit faster then what we Americans have typically heard it peformed. In fact, one well known professional was sitting near me and caused a rather large and obnoxiuos raucous at his displeasure -- and ended up leaving before the performance was over. Rude, but besides the point.

My point (there is one here relating to instruments!) is that so many people with so many great and NEW ideas were playing on instruments that were NOT Loree. I cannot tell you how many professionals in this country are moving away from Loree and to other brands. I witnessed 4 alone at this conference, share that Loree horns are becoming inconsistent or whatever. They were looking for something different.

It seemed most popular to me this year were the Howarth XL oboes amongst others. Very interesting and refreshing indeed.

My point is that it seems that this summer made apparent a shift in thinking to "outside the box" in both musical interpretation as well as brand preference. I feel safe in saying that my next horn (which will hopefully be next summer) in the oboe realm will NOT be a loree. I played some fantastic Howarth's, Fossati's, Marigaux's, and Covey's this year at conference. On the contrary, I played as many Royal's as possible at each and every table. I found ONE I would have considered buying, compared to numerous of other brands I would consider buying.

Someone else mentioned its all a matter of personal preference, and it definately is. However, it is a wonderful to be witness to so many different great brands of oboes!

Shawn
