A lot of the pros have Loree Royales nowadays, yes, but there are a lot of them that use other models of the Lorees, such as the AK. What I personally have perceived is that the Royales are much easier to make a reed for because they have a much darker sound inherently (they can cover more bad things in the reed!). For those of you that have tried professional-level Yamahas and Lorees (other than the Royale), for me it seems to be the middle ground between the two. I think that a lot of professional players go this route because when you're playing in a pro orchestra and have sometimes a few different programs every week, you simply can't have reed draughts because that is unacceptable at that level...so they go the Royale route because it's much more reliable in terms of the sound they're going to get.
Then again, I think that the reason that a lot of pros use the other Loree models is that they are very flexible, and there is a special resonance and warmth to the sound...however, again it does take a better reed to get them to sound really good, but when you have a great reed they really do sound amazing.
Again, this is all completely personal opinion, I don't know the actual reasons. This is just in my experience.
By the way, watch out, I think the Royales are actually thicker (i.e. the bore is the same size, but the wood on the outside is thicker) and hence heavier. They really are quie heavy...or at least the one I tried was.
