As pads are put in with shellac, the pad cups are heated with a flame to melt the shellac to make sure it adheres to both the inside of the cup and the pad itself, and this way the pearls will be scorched.

And anyone that has acidic perspiration will wear out the pearls pretty quickly, whereas thick silver plate or even gold or rhodium plate will be less prone to wear.
