Well, the balance thing seems incredibly important to me now that you've brought it up.
On any one finger note, my oboe tilts away from me - quite hard - which makes it difficult to hold onto the oboe. That's probably how I started the bad habit of squeezing the keys too hard - and it didn't help with the biting on the reed probably either since the tilt leans the reed against the top lip, I then have to bite a bit to keep the pressure even between the top and bottom lips.
(Personally, I think that my playing is very balanced right now since I do everything too much - squeeze the oboe, bite on the reeds.... moderation in all things...)
So, yesterday while I was having a lesson, I decided to see if my instructor could get a bit more technical, so I brought up the balance question. She has played on a nice Loree for years, so she really hadn't had to think about oboe balance. She quickly popped her reed out and handed me her Loree to try. Lo and behold - balance is an amazing thing. Her Loree seemed lighter than my Buffet (Chris P was right about that!). While playing on the Loree though, I couldn't help but notice that the lovely dark tone and vibrato did not come with the horn.... still have to work on that.
