I don't think I have too much to add on what to select from what people have already written, but here is a link to consider that has some sage advice.

As Professor Schuring suggests, having your daughter's teacher involved is important. I also would stress going to a reputable double-reed dealer. Oboes, Bassoons and such are a different animals, and dealers who do perfectly well with clarinets and flutes may not deal as well with an oboe.
