... and perhaps i should add, to my mind, brass tubes, brown cork and yellow reeds seem to colour coordinate better with reds, orange, yellow, bright green or rainbow combinations likewise. Of these choices i prefer red.
Silver tubes, presumably still brown cork, and again only to my mind, colour coordinate better with darkest reds to red-purple, medium & dark blue, blue-greens, purple and violet, magenta and neon pinks too.
Then there's another set of associations in my mind: green = soft, novice, orange = medium soft, beginner; red = medium, intermediate; blue = medium hard, advanced; purple = pro with any kind of reed!
but these associations don't seem important as a basis for choosing thread colour to me, it just so happens i prefer red.
When i get really good at making my own reeds and at playing to solo performance standard (one fine day in the far-off indefinite future) maybe i'll go to creamy off-white, pretty close to cane colour, so entire reed and thread wrap look esthetically uniform. This is sufficiently boring to look at, so audience won't be flagged to look at my weird oboe-playing face as much as the glittering of fast moving silver keys or twinkling sequins on my solo performance outfit (dream on, eh?!)
