For me, thread color has a psychological effect that I actually notice in my playing. I have tons of red, but I stay away from it now though cinnamon and burgundy are fine.
I prefer the purple, different shades of green, medium blue and gold. I just don't like the multi-color stuff, though its utility is evident.
I do use the colors to distinguish shapers used and other variables that I log in a reed diary. That is not enough, so I add bands of color using thread from those sewing kits you get at the dollar store.
