I like white thread, simply because it seems like I make my best reeds with it! Also, I find that keeping the thread colour consistent actually helps with the consistency of my reeds, because I get a consistent visual of what the reed is supposed to look like, so when cane colour or other parameters of the reed are different it's easier to tell.
I've never not used a thread colour because of fear of offending anyone, I just prefer darker colours! I think they look nicer.
