SMALL amount, meaning if reed is 70 mm long and if fray not more than 2 mm, clipping tip <<shouldn't change the function too much>> but if tip fray, chip or crack is 2-4 mm, retie might work only if you're desperate to economise, otherwise ... it's end of the road, so ruthlessly break both blades (psychologically helps to say good-bye, sniff-sob-tears-whimper) and salvage the tube
... especially good to bury old dead reeds just before New Year
