Mark, I know you are on a reed-crusade right now - which is good, we've all been there (from time to time). Here's my 20,00 ft. perspective, since I am currently on a "I don't care what my reeds sound like" high.
We all aim for a particular sound, the one we love, the 'fabulous' one. What we don't realize is that non-oboists have a much broader concept of what is an acceptable and authentic oboe sound. Do some double-blind testing with a group of non-oboist friends (string-players are best) and you'll soon see what I mean.
More important than timbre, depth, brightness etc. is how well we PLAY the MUSIC. Responsiveness, articulation, stability and dynamic range are FAR FAR more important (and audible) than imperceptible* differences of tone!
I have recordings of Heinz Holliger sounding like a buzz-saw - and playing amazing, stunning music! If only I could achieve 1/20th of that I would be happy!
Bottom line: Make the reed stable, responsive and easy-blowing. NEVER adjust for tone.
J.
* to everyone but you, of course.
