I struggle with this idea in my head. Except for me my idea of the sound I am producing does not match up with reality. One of these days I will get brave and post a recording. I need a good microphone for my iphone, as I would be using that to record. Let say that I have a long way to go.
Heinz Holliger was the first oboist I ever really listened to, and that bright sound has stuck with me as ideal over the years.
I play mostly with a wind band. Full band is 60 musicians - all wind and brass and percussion with one or two oboes. We can be very very loud. Our wonderful director has a one instrument per part rule when we have solos.
My solution to making myself heard in concert band? Make my own reeds. When I was using machine made American Scrape reeds the sound was so tiny. Since I have started playing on my own reeds you can tell there is an oboe in the band for sure. The hand made reeds can be played with finesse too. Even a hand made reed from another oboist helps. Not sure if that is the solution to your problem.
Have a great day.
