Oboe reed making is long tedious process since the cane changes over time. Once that saliva etc hits the new reed changes begin to occur. So my reed making occurs over days with possible touch-ups after a week or more.
The achievement of that good reed with pitch stability, flexibility, and golden tone is quite an adventure.
At the moment I made 5 reeds (one cracked) so I am left with four. They are in tune with good pitch stability and a decent tone; however they do not have the ease/ flexibility and round tone I desire. So I will adjust them over the next few days.
Cane quality is such a great variable .... it is so difficult to control ... if not impossible. At times I scrape a reed and its perfect with very little touch-up. It's almost like magic!
So if you make your own reeds you can be somewhat picky ... which can drive you nuts. What is good enough?
In the final analysis as I said before ... you need to know how you want to sound and strive for it. In my mind Mr. Holliger's tone does not fit my ideal at all. Maybe Peter Cooper and others or a combination of Oboe tones ... a little from here and there. Listen ... listen to others play and take from them.
And of course its just not the tone but what you do with it!
