Your comments were so good, I thought I would "attach" to yours. Years ago, a friend, who was a Still student, who now is retired from one of the major U.S. orchestras, said that one of the differences between the Still, school of reed making and the deLancie school, is that the Philadelphia school reeds have extremely thin tips, so much so, that sometimes, they squeak! There is an example of this in a Cleveland recording of the Tschaikovsky 5th, but neither Lifschey, nor Mack is the player on this recording, but the player was a Tabuteau student, to the best of my knowledge. My friend said that we in the Still school, would normally cut off that kind of tip, a little bit. Now, this info is about 40 years old, so things may have changed. I would like to ask though, what is the best or most popular term for the section between the heart and the tip? Taper, slope, ? Regards.
