What you are doing is honorable... but...
Like any musical insrument it can take time for sure... and having a solo after a week is a no no...
I play about 6 instruments (2 primary, trombone and now oboe), I have been playing oboe for about 2 - 3 months now. When I started after about 5 - 10 minutes my jaws would be in pain, and I would never reach the jello stage, basically your body saying that something is really wrong. 2 -3 months later I started playing with a local community group... lone behold the first peice that I sight read I had not a duet but a solo, totally exposed 16 measures... ouch! Well other than a few wrong notes (and some freaking out) I played the solo, and it actually sounded decient (well to my ear), but not concert quailty. The first time I will play in a concert setting is October 22, 2005, about 3 weeks away.
The only real sameness between flute and oboe are the fingerings are about the same (I played flute for about 3 years... not for me), but the embecure is TOTALLY different. I still have fingering glitches (like going from a Db to and Eb to a F (key of Db) in a faster passage), and I am not even close to "runs". Right now I can play about 2 hours with breaks in a practice setting until I can not even blow through the reed (jello). I love the fact that oboes get so many rests in some pieces... :D
Good luck... and if this is just starting your junior year I would seriously say that I would learn the instrument this year and play it your senior year... hard to semi hard classical peices IMO are a stretch at this stage...
Humbling if you ask me...
