And I'm adding one more thing:
<<< There's no backing down now! >>
Yes, there is. You go tell your band director, quite simply, that you bit off more than you can chew. And that you can't do it. He can just deal with it.
Get your mom to go with you to talk to him, if you need to. It's nice that you're happy you made his eyes light up, but really... He needs meds, or counseling, or something, if he seriously thinks you can pull this off.
You really cannot do this thing, Flo. Don't even try. If nothing else, think of the hash you'll make of Schubert, who really deserves better. And think of the people in the audience who DO know how it's supposed to go, as it's a very famous bit, and you'll totally embarrass yourself by hacking and bleating and squawking your way through it. A beginning oboe sticks out a mile, the same way a beginning flutist playing, say, Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun would. Can you imagine that "I learned to play the flute this weekend" flutist attempting the Debussy? I can't. And a beginning flute doesn't squeak at inappropriate moments like an oboe does.
Don't make your parents sit there and be ashamed for you while you massacre Schubert. Don't make other people's parents sit there and wince at the musical butchery. Opt out.
