Man am I glad I found you all! *kisses forum*
I am in dire need of oboe assistance.
Well first off, to introduce myself, I'm a High School Junior, who has found herself in the biggest of predicaments...
My main instrument is the flute - I've been playing for 5 years and am very skilled in that area...I've played a variety of advance repetoire, etc. etc. The school that I am in does have a shortage of the double reed instruments...having to replace a bassoon part with an alto sax...a second hand orchestra in all honesty. Anyway, a fellow flutist and friend of mine decided that we should play oboe - immediately telling our director, causing such excitement in his eyes. There's no backing down now!
I am not saying I'm opposed to learning a new instrument...I'm rather excited! The only problem is, I've just rented the instrument this afternoon. It's a Selmer 1492B, and is in very good condition. I have only one reed, and it's medium.
Having a flute embouchure, I normally play extremely relaxed - with my experience, there isn't any struggling to play at all.
The oboe is another story.
My orchestra has a concert this Wednesday evening, and we are playing the abridged version of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony. As many of you know, or may not, there is a Clarinet and Oboe duet, very exposed. As I'm just learning the oboe, I'm in a bit of a panic =[
After merely 5-10 minutes, my mouth is so incredibly sore, its horrible. The reed is saturated - I have it in a bit of water before I practice. What I really need help with is the embouchure formation - can anyone help me on how exactly I need to form my embouchure to keep the sound in the oboe? I'm constantly trying new things to keep pitch, but I just need some expert help here.
Thank you so much!
