Do you already play another instrument?
Oboe is one of those instruments for which most people will need guidance in learning to play. If there is any way you can get yourself to a QUALIFIED oboe teacher (by which I mean, someone who plays with a symphony or teaches oboe at a college), even for a handful of lessons, you will do yourself a huge favor.
There are quite a number of oboe instructional videos on YouTube. Here is a good place to start:
