Hi David,

Are you learning to play the oboe? Do you have a teacher? That's how most people learn how to make oboe reeds -- their teacher teaches them how to do it. It's pretty hard to learn to do it from a book or a video.

Here is a page that has several good videos from a person who makes and sells oboe reeds, showing how he goes about it.

Then I would hold off on learning how to make reeds until you have gotten a good handle on how to play the oboe...starting with making reeds is putting the cart before the horse a bit, I think. Learning the oboe is difficult enough without throwing reedmaking into the mix from the start!

David,

Do you already play another instrument?

Oboe is one of those instruments for which most people will need guidance in learning to play. If there is any way you can get yourself to a QUALIFIED oboe teacher (by which I mean, someone who plays with a symphony or teaches oboe at a college), even for a handful of lessons, you will do yourself a huge favor.

There are quite a number of oboe instructional videos on YouTube. Here is a good place to start:

Check out some of the other videos in the right sidebar of this link, too.

David,
I studied oboe with a professional teacher for less than a year; he helped me to 'un-learn' bad habits and get a good foundation. And in that year, I progressed enough to learn reed-making.

There's nothing like having a model to get a good start; if you simply can't get a teacher, then take advantage of ALL the on-line help you can.

And I echo the others: DON'T try reed-making until you reach a certain level of playing. It would only frustrate you.

I have just started and am finally beginning to get used to the instrument and its abnormal mouth position. Any advice you may have on playing the oboe could be useful to me. i really like the instrument and am hoping to get as close as i can to perfection.

Thank you for the link and yes I do play a couple of other instruments but I started with the clarinet. A majority of the instruments I play are single reeds though. Hopefully I can get myself a teacher for this oboe.

Good luck with the oboe pursuits.

Oboe is the most amazing musical experience I've had.

My performance world includes clarinet, piano, flute, saxes, oboe and english horn.

Main emphasis was on oboe and jazz piano and jazz flute.

Its all good. And they are all very different.

Oboe is by far the most challenging and the most rewarding. And the reeds just make it all the more special and difficult.

You have some great advice here... get a good teacher, master the basics then worry about reed making.

Do budget for good reeds for a while, and unfortunately that probably means $100 per month (minimum). A suggestion.... make your initial investment, work very hard to improve, and then ask your music director for a stipend for reeds.

Otherwise, listen, really LISTEN to great oboe players on recordings... develop your oboe concept and have at it. Youtube is a huge resource these days. And that part is free...

Oboe is a funny thing, easy to love, difficult to master. If you let the love of oboe part be your guide, better things will happen. Just do it! (Nike)

It's a wonderful instrument... very PERSONAL. I think that's why so many of us are 'gaga' for it.
You have a great mindset, Just Do It, as Craig says.
You'll go through some frustrating 'patches' but hang in there.
We're hoping you can land a great teacher; in the meantime as Craig says, listen to good oboists on-line. Or get an album or two. As ahigh schooler I listened attentively to Harold Gomberg's The Baroque Oboe and it certainly helped my playing...

Hi oboeplayerDavid,

A couple of years ago I had the same question as you do now. At the time I was taught oboe by a professional teacher, but she flatly denied to teach me how to make reeds. It just wasn't part of her teachingplan.

I resorted to buying stacks of books and check the internet for information.
This search never got me as far as to be able to produce a playable reed.

My next step was to dump that teacher for a better one, and my current teacher taught me the basics of tying and scraping from day 1 - and much better playing btw.

There is one video that I still use though. It's called The Oboe Reed Making DVD by Linda Walsh. The video shows how to make the reed very methodically, and even after private reed classes, I still review that video a lot. Her way of explaining just works very well for me.

In my opinion there is no substitute for a good teacher though, I always ask her to check my latest creations and that helps me a lot - still got a lot to learn.

Cheers,

Joepie

A good place to start would be with Jay Light's book on making reeds. It is a basic text on the subject.

It is so easy to say "find a good teacher", but some good teachers are not much interested in teaching making reeds, a fairly unmusical activity. Sometimes good teachers who make and sell reeds to students seem tired of the reed making so much that they don't seem to want to talk about it to students.

Once I met the very nice late Bill Gower, whose reeds are still sold, and asked him if he could give me some lessons in making reeds. He replied, "no, but I can teach you to play the oboe!" A student of Tabuteau, he found that he couldn't find much musical employment in Los Angeles.

DO try ready-made reeds and pray that they suffice!!!!!

There are a few makers here (PLEASE IDENTIFY YOURSELVES) including (but not limited to)
oboedrew
JMarzluf
cjwright

Especially with the American technique, it is really hard to develop the proper technique on your own.

Note that some makers may suit individual players more than others. Reasons include physiognomy, instrument, weather and many others.

David Weber has a video and book. At least, if you watch it you will make a reed that works. But, as the rest have said, get a good teacher to show you.
