Hi oboeplayerDavid,
A couple of years ago I had the same question as you do now. At the time I was taught oboe by a professional teacher, but she flatly denied to teach me how to make reeds. It just wasn't part of her teachingplan.
I resorted to buying stacks of books and check the internet for information.
This search never got me as far as to be able to produce a playable reed.
My next step was to dump that teacher for a better one, and my current teacher taught me the basics of tying and scraping from day 1 - and much better playing btw.
There is one video that I still use though. It's called The Oboe Reed Making DVD by Linda Walsh. The video shows how to make the reed very methodically, and even after private reed classes, I still review that video a lot. Her way of explaining just works very well for me.
In my opinion there is no substitute for a good teacher though, I always ask her to check my latest creations and that helps me a lot - still got a lot to learn.
Cheers,
Joepie
