Good luck with the oboe pursuits.
Oboe is the most amazing musical experience I've had.
My performance world includes clarinet, piano, flute, saxes, oboe and english horn.
Main emphasis was on oboe and jazz piano and jazz flute.
Its all good. And they are all very different.
Oboe is by far the most challenging and the most rewarding. And the reeds just make it all the more special and difficult.
You have some great advice here... get a good teacher, master the basics then worry about reed making.
Do budget for good reeds for a while, and unfortunately that probably means $100 per month (minimum). A suggestion.... make your initial investment, work very hard to improve, and then ask your music director for a stipend for reeds.
Otherwise, listen, really LISTEN to great oboe players on recordings... develop your oboe concept and have at it. Youtube is a huge resource these days. And that part is free...
Oboe is a funny thing, easy to love, difficult to master. If you let the love of oboe part be your guide, better things will happen. Just do it! (Nike)
