What makes a good oboist? Short answer
... THE 3 P'S ...
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE
EVERY DAY, ONE DAY AT A TIME
Practice ... all the music you have or get, until you can play it all well (no matter how many weeks, months, years it takes to get there)
Practice ... memorizing, especially page changes, page turns and many other important passages otherwise
Practice ... extending embouchure stamina, easily going the distance
Practice ... training and taming reeds
Practice ... habitually precise and appropriate finger techniques
Practice ... long beautifully maintained & beautifully shaped notes in tune
Practice ... slurs and all articulations with just the right emphasis
Practice ... all technical details of tempo, rhythms, time signatures, etc.
Practice ... wonderful opening attacks and finishing notes everywhere
Practice ... breath management techniques for optimum well-being
Practice ... dynamics with just the right volume and emphasis
Practice ... artistic expressiveness
Practice ... scales of various kinds in every key until fingering is habitual
Practice ... frustratingly difficult technical exercises, ditto
Practice ... tolerating an acceptable & appropriate level of imperfection
Practice ... following the director or conductor's specific instructions for changing or adjusting your artistic interpretation willingly & competantly, no matter how much you disagree
Practice ... AND EVERYTHING ELSE
And, last but not least ... WHEN you've done enough long, hard hours of homework and prep work already
Practice ... relaxing completely and having a good time
