What makes a great oboist IMHO is, pure and simple, to play in tune. Period. Nothing else matters--you can honk, you can squeak, you can squawk, you can play the wrong notes, you can forget to push the octave key and play in the wrong octave--but as long as you are NOT FLAT, all is copacetic.

I have this on the highest authority, that of my family. :D
