I have to admit that the extreme behavior described in all of your posts would be well over the red line for my orchestra as well. Crying babies? Chewing gum? Photo albums? Good grief.
I completely agree that there are musical directors who have Presence, who command respect in all they do. I cannot imagine messing around if Daniel Barenboim is at the podium!
My intention was to point out that it is possible to have a lot of fun in a community orchestra, without everyone sitting rigidly to attention at all times. The community aspect is as important as the music.
