It is funny, reading the comments regarding behaviour of adult musicians, as my partner and a good friend of mine both take school ensembles and adult community ensembles. They say working with adults is much harder!
As a community musician, I feel teacher instincts kick in and will shush others (generally) if I think their noise is being disrespectful or interrupting the conductor at work.
You can make a choice as to whether as a young player this simple method of letting others know to be quiet is appropriate, but I think it's a good way of letting both others and your conductor know the moment when the noise becomes too much. Perhaps after enough attempts, they will get the picture!
Leading young groups can be tough. Susan is right - a conductor knows which fights are worth fighting and which are best left, both musically and behaviourally. And all conductors vary in the standards of these they will accept.
Good luck on your audition for the advanced group!
