 Re: Best living oboists?

Where would you be able to go (i.e., what city?) to see any given oboist?

The ones that Craig has mentioned are mostly historical -- no longer with us, except for Douvas, Woodhams, and Robinson. So, I would go look on the websites of those three, and find out if/when they are playing anywhere, and go for it!

I do know for sure that Joe Robinson is performing now and then, and I will bet that Woodhams is, as well. Douvas is certainly performing, but I don't know if she does any recital or guest-artist type performances.

Another oboist to add to your CD collection, IMO, would be Ray Still. And Nancy Ambrose King (both living, but he is quite elderly). The list gets really endless.

Hey, here's an idea: why not get your son a membership in the IDRS (International Double Reed Society)? They have a website with a wealth of information, and a magazine that is likewise very informative.
