Thanks for these links.... excellent resources for study.

With the period instruments, I would suppose modern instrument building standards improve/change things from the standpoint of playability, and I can't imagine the players would resort to reed making the truly old-fashiond way.... no gougers, no shapers. I can't imagine it, but that does not mean it isn't done. I just don't know.

I wonder how the juxtaposition of modern acoustical science, and other engineering advancements introduces some anachronistic element even using the period instruments.

But to your main point, the sounds are awesome and imbued with qualities very remote to our modern instruments.

It really is gorgeous stuff...

The Apollo's Fire group out of Ohio has some period instrument records, and the oboe sound they get is very beautiful as well.
