I have to agree with Alphons about Albrecht Mayer, Albrecht Mayer, Albrecht Mayer...
=> I heard a recording of Bach's famous double concerto with Nigel Kennedy... I swear Nigel learned a few lessons there! This guy is so playful with his music, listening to Mayer just lifts my soul out of this world!

I really do admire Christoph Hartmann for specializing in Pasculli. Not my favourite repertoire, but to make the Oboe a virtuoso instrument in the league of Paganini on the violin... WOW!

HOWEVER, probably the best sound I ever heard was from the late Cynthia Steljes of Quartetto Gelato http://quartettogelato.ca/. She's the only oboe on existing recordings. They went through 2 clarinettists before returning (very wisely!) to the oboe. The ONLY hesitation I have on her is a limited dynamic range... but she died of lung cancer (Asbestos related), so she really was amazing!

*** The guy that replaced her, Colin Maier, has a pretty good tone too!

But I have to include the baroque oboe in the picture.... this is actually why I like A.M. so much: his modern instrument is approaching the charms of the baroque!
