 Re: English horn hand pain

It`s about time this thing was invented and marketed. It is essentially the same thing I did when I was suffering from tendonitis 15 years ago --- "jimmied" a string to hold the bell on the stand. Except this W.R.I.S.T. gadget does it with less fuss and risk of scratching the instrument. It will be a matter of affordability wheter one improvises or purchases.

Two things I`d like to stress from personal experience are posture and physical fitness.

I had always been taught to keep the instrument low to my belly and my eyes high causing a sharp angle between my face plane and the instrument. Recently I have been watching videos of Albrecht Mayer doing everything I was taught not to do. I tried it and found an immediate benefit to my comfort and ease of playing. I don't mean that his posture is right and others wrong: I'm saying that its right for him and me. Elbows up and forward while pulling the shoulder blades down was greatly reduced the strain on my wrist. I have also been working a lot on thumb-rests and conclude that my thumb is simply too short! It doesn't matter how high or low it goes, the idea is to have it point towards the instrument. If the thumb is too far in, then my wrist bends too much. Wine corks (cut with replaceable blade knives) and hockey tape are invaluable to preventing chronic pain!

Often, artists snub sports, but wrongfully so. Keeping the body fit --- I don't mean muscle building, but rather mobility of the joints --- is worth a hundred times any gadget or therapy! I HATE swimming, no kidding, I loathe the pool, but the year I forced myself to go to my appartment building's pool every day had unbelievable results.

Best of luck to all of you.
