Check out the following video. I tried one at the IDRS Conference last June and I was amazed. If I were still playing I would buy one in a heartbeat!
(and I have no economic interest whatsoever. It's just a great idea.)

For what it's worth, my experience with the neck strap was that it transferred the weight to my neck and bound me to the instrument in a way that inhibited freedom of movement. And a peg anchored me to the floor. This gadget gives you freedom of motion while supporting the weight of the instrument.
