I've had my instrument for almost a year now. The intonation issues have been present from the beginning. I've been able to work around it w/ slightly shorter reeds and 46mm tubes. I tried several horns at John Symer's in Philadelphia and they had similar problems. He offered to do some undercutting for me but recommended that I just allow the natural course of things to progress . . .i.e. with time the bore will change and the pitch will come up.
WRT to the "hiss" thing. This is definitely real. I adjusted for it by playing a little bit more towards the tip of the reed. I'm not sure if the sound is truly gone or if I just notice it any more. Regardless, it's not audible on the other side of the horn. I always had a theory that this "flaw" is part of what makes the horn project so nicely.
To clarify, my instrument is grenadilla, not kingwood.
Despite it's flaws, it's head and shoulder above my old Loree GT (which dated from 1984), and for the price, is simply amazing. But if you have been accustomed to playing on a Loree, then you definitely have an adjustment period ahead of you.
(In the interest of full disclosure, I bought it on the recommendation of my teacher --who has now switched back to his Covey!-- and never have compared it head to head w/ other makes.)
