 Re: Yamaha YOB-841T?

My teacher and 3 people in the oboe studio here at Laurier have the kingwood/rosewood Yamaha YOB-841T oboes and I have heard nothing but rave reviews. All of them swear by their instrument. With repsect to the issues...

1) Cracking: Just take super-good care of the thing. Make sure you always use your dampit, and always heat it up under the armpits fully before playing it. Also, make well sure that you break it in properly. It's not something you can rush through! Make sure you have someone that knows what they're talking about talk you through this.

I know one person that has 17 pins in his kingwood oboe, but I know 2 others that have had theirs for quite a while and have had no cracks at all. It just totally depends on the instrument. And don't they have a 5-year warranty now? I don't think (but don't take my word for it by any means!!!) that an oboe is too likely to crack after 5 years of use unless you take it into weird atmospheric conditions.

2) Tone: This is what everyone relaly loves these oboes for. They have the warmest, darkest tone of almost any oboe that I have ever tried. I think the hiss is probably to do with your reed, but if you didn't have the hiss on the other oboes that you tried then it's a possibility this oboe is a strange one. The hiss may well also be from a bit of water that got stuck in a key or two.

3) Depth of tone: Again, you should really get someone that really knows what they're talking about to help you out with this. I know that most oboes will feel stuffy/resistant when you get them but with time they will open up and get a bigger sound. Don't worry about projection, everyone that I've ever heard playing on these instruments has great projection, even in large orchestra situations.

I have tried quite a few of these instruments, and I was really strongly thinking of getting one. I love my grenadilla, but I really think that you will love this instrument. A huge bonus that you didn't mention as well is the weight. You will avoid tons of problems because the oboe is so light.
