That's one thing that I forgot to mention that's super-important. The Yamahas are by far and away the easiest instruments to make reeds for. My teacher has tried tons of oboes and he's said that he finds it really hard to go back to other oboes now because they're so hard to make good reeds for. I have tried reeds in other oboes and they sound pretty awful but when I put them into the Yamaha they sound great. I know that you really have to make reeds for your own oboe, but I have had people put reeds made for other oboes in mine and love the sound of it (mine's Grenadilla btw, not kingwood, but it's a general thing with Yahamas).
I think that is one of the great things about Yamahas, that you can get away with brighter reeds. I hope you aren't referring to a edgy/shrill bright, but just having some higher overtones in the sound as well as the low, dark ones. It makes for a really dark sound with a bright core that really projects well. I personally like it more than a straight really dark sound that has more difficulties projecting (and, as I recently found out, apparently a brighter sound is easier to play in tune with because it has more overtones).
