Wow, 17 pins is a lot of cracking. Yes, I believe that Yamaha does have a 5-year warranty but I've also heard from my dealer that there have been problems working with them on this (e.g., sometimes they bill for work that should be covered by the warranty). In any case, I'm pretty good about not cracking oboes and like I said, I'm willing to take my chances.
WRT the hiss in the sound, it's pretty consistent across all of the 841's, both the grenadilla and kingwood models and everyone I've talked to (except one person) who's tried these oboes has noticed it. Maybe "hiss" is the wrong word -- it's just a little extra reed noise that seems to come through that isn't present on most other brands of oboe. Like I said though, it's not a big deal for me.
Part of the problem with the deadness in the sound seems to be alleviated by using a brighter sounding reed. I remember Richard Woodhams saying once in a master class that it's easier to make reeds for the Yamaha than for the Loree and this may be part of what he was referring to.
