People don't realize that pro players walk out on stage with a screwdriver, besides their normal paraphernalia. I sat beside an oboist who after playing a couple notes would make minute adjustments. The pads, being cork do swell and shrink given the weather, and it is starting to get humid in some places and dry in others. Sometimes having an instrument serviced can lull us into a false sense of security. Check the seal, it is possible to do on the bottome joint, learn certain playing tests that you can do to check it things are out of adjustment. I have over the years learned little tricks from all of my colleauges-the cool sounding warm-up stuff you hear oboe players do is often a playing test for adjustments purposes.
