I have noticed that if I happened to produce a single column of moisture down the top joint on the side of the instrument opposite the tone holes, then I would not develop problems with water under any of those pads. I have also noticed that if I laid the instrument across my lap while resting or turning pages, that this column would be disrupted and the probability of water problems would increase; consequently I would keep the instrument more vertical at all times. If I noticed an 'in tact' column of water when it was time for intermission, I was reluctant to disturb it with swabbing, and instead I placed the instrument on a very stable stand (such as the Blayman) and covered it with a 'cozy' (also making certain that it is positioned in a place where other musicians could not topple it when coming and going). I have not done this, but I have heard of oboists utilizing this capillary action of water by creating the column deliberately with tap water (and probably an eye dropper or other such device) prior to playing.
