When you start the oboe, try and get the best rental instrument you can. Unfortunately, it has been my experience as a teacher, that many rental instruments are not in proper adjustment. I always tell my students to take them back and ask for something better. I would recommend the Yamaha student instruments highly. Even the basic student models play well in tune. See if the music store or instrument rental service will rent you an intermediate level Yamaha (a 410 or 411 - I don't know what the new model names are yet. Yamaha just changed them). They may not rent these, but it wouldn't hurt asking. They are very good instruments.

As far as reeds go, reeds should never be hard to blow. You shouldn't feel like you will have a fat lip after playing! Reeds should be comfortable and free blowing. I can't recommend any commercial brands because I have never played any that I like. I make and sell reeds if you are interested. Email me for more information.

A good teacher is very important. Since you have played two other woodwinds, you shouldn't have a hard time with fingerings. If you were a student of mine, I would recommend the Hinke oboe method. I think it's great for students such as yourself who have played another woodwind. It starts out fairly easy and gets more challenging very quickly. Another method I would recommend are the Blaine Edelfson books. If you were my student, I would probably start you on the intermediate level. He does a good job explaining articulation, etc.

Good luck to you. The oboe is not an easy instrument, but is very addicting. You will enjoy the challenge! AND the oboe is given such gorgeous parts in orchestral literature. Oh what fun!

Kathy
