I have played Laubin oboes for my whole career. (It has been a long time...we'll leave it at that) $8600 for a 5 year old Laubin is not out of line.
That is the person's "asking" price. My guess is they will have no problem selling their oboe for that price. These instruments are hand made, one by one, by 2 meticulous craftsmen. Talk about a labor of love!!! It takes years on a waiting list to get your hands on a Laubin. It's worth the extra money just to not have to wait!!! Plus....it's probably already broken in!!!
I'm currently playing a cocobolo Laubin that is unbelievable. It is the best oboe (of any make) that I have ever played. People who speak of not being able to make a Laubin "sing" just don't know how to play a Laubin. Laubin oboes are not for everyone, but for those of us who are lucky enough to own and play them, we're sure grateful that they are available as an option to Loree etc.
I believe that Liang Wang is currently playing cocobolo Laubin's in the NY Phil. You should go to the Laubin web site and take a look at some of the other great musicians who are current or former Laubin players. Laubin's feel a bit like Loree's used to feel many years ago, when you actually had to break them in. I remember Mr. Mack saying that Loree's are overbored so that you can play them "right out of the box". He also suggested trying to find a Loree that had a little more resistance to it ie one that needed to be played in a bit, kind of like........a Laubin!!!
