... realise me B long-winded (ha!) on this board but I was thinking online about ideas for a Better synth reed than seems to be available at the present time ... based on the moanings aired, it's obvious there needs to be a BETTER reed ... one which would produce a desirably different kind of tonality for progress and change ... and as for Arundo donax going away just ask that question in another 30 years of world population expansion ... is A.d. edible?!
... imagining a design that might work, but there needs to be eng sci and prototype development behind it ... volunteers needed, long hours, no pay, plus discouraging negative reactions from double reed players ...!
Progress was ever thus.
... the most important thing is for the beginner to have an EASIER start and blowing like a whistle is an easier start (less work for embouchure development too sissy for some I s'pose) ... can kids wearing braces play oboe the way things are now? ... OUCH!
... I agree totally that young oboe players need as few frustrations as possible, but assuming synth equals rigid plasic is definitely not what I'm thinking ... also, I'm not thinking about blowing a synth in quite the same way either ... so would it really be an oboe one might ask?
... try out some soft baby soothers sometime and see what possibilities present themselves to creative imagineering for a BETTER synth reed?
... furthermore, I think the reeds I'm imagining could indeed have character, depending on the types & thickness of filaments used
... and yes, arundo donax has character of a kind synthetics cannot possibly duplicate ... ergo, that automatically means synth cannot possibly have any desirably different characteristics? ... come on, THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
... also, keen oboe students could still make their own cane reeds, no doubt about that, and discover the ecstasy (and agony!) of doing reeds the traditional ways (and of course teachers are delighted when their students are excited about learning new things)
... as for being a rite of passage, well ... all passages change as more meaningful rites are created from improvements, eh?
