Plastic, in a heartbeat.
Richard Woodhams certainly did. He played a Loree with a plastic top joint before he switched to Yamaha, and Laubin has lined its top joint, including the tone holes, with plastic for years.
Heckel bassoons have been lined with plastic in the wing joint (with metal tone hold liners) and the descending half of the boot joint for over 100 years.
