OK ... realise this is a highly controversial topic with huge anti-plastic attitudes out there ... but have any of you had real playing experience with plastic reeds and can give me sensible opinions about them?
Pros and cons? Heard they last longer, don't need to be scraped, cost more, sound awful. Haven't heard one myself, don't know.
What kind of sound? Very synth? Very bright? Inflexible, can't be expressive?
Do they do something awful sound-wise to wood oboes or do they brighten wood tones?
How do they sound in el-cheapo plastic student oboes?
Do they get too soft in hot weather? Too stiff too play in cold weather?
Are they really good at producing all notes, or are they troublesome for some notes?
Are they relatively easier or harder to play than a "good" cane reed?
Is a medium plastic reed roughly equivalent to medium cane reed, or do you have to get softer or harder in plastic for a medium cane embouchure?
Any insights and recommendations welcome ... thanks!
