Re ears on shapers, I don't think they do much at all. I took the ears off of an old shaper. The cane is still secure it doesn't move around. It is much easier to center the cane and you don't have to narrow gouged cane to fit between the ears to begin with. After you've shaped the cane you don't have to lop off any ears on the shaped cane. NO EARS for me. If you don't feel good about grinding off the ears then have a machinist do it or someone that who has skill in this area....repair guy.
