Hi everyone,
I learned a lot watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djCChnJ1tXE
It is about six minutes long, and in German. I have a few questions about it, and I hope someone can answer them!
1. What is the rotating lever attachment on the micrometer?
[One possibility is that it raises a narrow collar, exposing a point feeler]
2. Using this lever, the maker is measuring the thickness of something - the innermost layer of the cane, perhaps, that which will form the extreme tip? - and writes down that it is 13 micrometers thick. Why is this important?
3. His shaper has no ears - and this seems to be much easier to use than the normal eared variety. Certainly it will be much easier on whatever blade one uses (he uses a reed knife to shape the cane). Any comments?
4. When tying on, he uses a small rubber band to hold the blades together, and most of his tie is upwards, not downwards. He seems to be tying with far less tension than I commonly use. Comments?
5. The lay is entirely different - but the extreme tip has an inverted V. Do you see how he creates this? It seems that he cuts into the cane with his knife, and lifts away the top layer! We have seen Albrecht Meyer doing the same with a stanley-knife also. Is this the secret of the German sound?
Anyhow - enjoy the visuals. The video seems to be well made, and possibly part of a set, although there are no others linked.
