The way the machine works is like this. It is a standard micrometer (hence the reading of .6). But then you have that rotating collar which puts additional pressure down on the cane. At that point, what the micrometer reads will lessen. The difference between the first measurement and the measurement after the collar has been engaged gives you a number to put to the density of a peice of cane. My school recently bought one of these machines, and I personally find it bothersome and time consuming to use. However, the results are undeniable, and my professor loves it.
