My French oboe teacher makes his own reeds and his shapers don't have ears either.
I once attended a reedmaking demonstration in France and the reed-maker used a small piece of tubing to hold the reeds in place while tying on. I have tried using them a couple of times but am inclined to agree with my teacher (who doesn't use them) that they are more trouble than they are worth. They are supposed to make it easier for you to know where exactly you have to tie on to but, having got the hang of tying on, I find it easier just to measure. For those who are very new at tying on they make it almost impossible to not tie the reed on straight but again (apart from my very first attempt) I have never tied the reeds on lop-sided.
